COLT

Colt caught Katherine snooping in his office… for the second time.

“I’m so sorry, please let me explain.” Katherine turned to face him head-on, straightening and attempting to look strong, though appearing more like a child who’d been caught with their hand in the cookie jar.

Colt punched every word, “Un. Fucking. Believable.”

This is what I get for trusting people, he scolded himself again for ever having brought a stranger back to his ranch. His place of solitude.

Tears welled up in Katherine’s eyes. “Please give me a chance to explain.” As powerful as Katherine was, she seemed so frail in that moment, like she might shatter into a million pieces.

Colt set his jaw, and knew his dour expression told her virtually everything she needed to know. “Just go. Get out of my office. You can sleep here tonight, but I want you gone tomorrow.”

Tears fell down her cheeks in small rivers, but she didn’t make another sound. Katherine simply looked down and walked past him on her way to the stairs.

Colt clenched his fists but fought to keep his composure. Despite his furious anger, he wasn’t going to use his impressive size and physique to intimidate or scare a woman he had genuine feelings for.

One foot in front of the other, Colt released his fists and walked to the kitchen on the other side of the house. He kept all of his alcohol in a corner nook. He grabbed his prized Blanton’s whiskey, poured two fingers of the brown liquor into a glass he pulled from an overhead cabinet, and began to walk away with this drink. However, he stopped, took a step backward, and reached back to grab the bottle to bring with him.

Colt walked out of the house onto his porch. The full moon in the clear sky illuminated the grounds of the ranch with its pale glow, and he could easily see his horse barn. Also in the distance, the towering snowcapped Rockies were lit up by moonlight, seeming like white candles in the clear sky.

From this vantage point, the naked eye could see the band of stars that comprised the Milky Way galaxy. Colt threw back his shot of whiskey and sat down on a rocking chair. The wooden chair creaked against the great strain of supporting such a large man as he slowly rocked to and fro. The only other sound that disturbed the night was the mare that had recently birthed a foal. He could hear her huffing and fidgeting in the barn.

Colt sucked in a lungful of crisp mountain air and then hoisted himself out of the rocking chair. Upon standing, he poured another shot of whiskey from the bottle he still clutched. Let’s see what my favorite girl is up to.

Old Dancer greeted Colt with a snicker when he walked into the barn. She moved close to the stall door to wait for him, and her foal—which Colt had named Kodiak but affectionately called Kody—stuck close to her side.
